Cuban-born Hector Fernandez has experimented with many mediums over the years, but finds the detail obtainable with scratchboard to be most to his liking.

Scratchboard is a rigid board that is covered with a layer of white clay, which can then be covered with black ink.

Wildlife, his favorite subject, is one that lends itself to scratchboard.  Beginning with a solid black surface,  Hector uses a variety of instruments to remove the black ink.  Each scratch reveals the white clay layer beneath the ink.  A multitude of scratches of various lenghts, widths and shapes begins to transform the blackness into textures, eventually becoming the works that you can see in the Gallery.

Hector resides in the city of Santa Clarita, California.
